EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Washing away the grime of 'Old England'" we are transported back in time to Lepton C of E First School's 130th anniversary celebration. Non-teaching assistant Charlotte Squire takes on the role of a Victorian washerwoman, while five-year-olds Matthew Hodgson and Terry Peters become adorable little "urchins" ready for a clean-up. The school community fully embraced the Victorian era, with staff and pupils donning traditional clothing instead of their usual modern attire. The atmosphere was filled with nostalgia as calculators were replaced by chalk and slates, and fashionable tracksuits and trainers gave way to breeches and pinafores. To make the occasion even more special, parents were invited to witness their children's performance of Victorian songs and poems during an afternoon concert. It was a heartwarming display of talent that surely left everyone feeling proud. This print captures not only a moment frozen in time but also highlights the importance of history education within our schools. By immersing themselves in another era, these young students gained a deeper understanding of what life might have been like for children long ago. As we admire this snapshot from 1990s West Yorkshire, let us appreciate how educational institutions like Lepton C of E First School strive to create memorable experiences that bring history alive for future generations.
