The Frontier of Fear. 23rd december 1979. "Frohliche Weihnachten"

The Frontier of Fear. 23rd december 1979. " Frohliche Weihnachten" - Merry Christmas, called John Knight across the East/West German Border towards the silent, unsmiling guards who patrol the most un-natural division between one country and another in the world. In 20 years, the East Germans haven t once said Good Morning to their military counterparts whose job is to prevent their own countrymen escaping to the West, with vicuous dogs to supplement the tripwires and Russian made 7.63mm Kalashnikov machine guns. During their two years conscripted service the East Germans are paid £ 3 a month and are under instructions to shoot any colleague who makes a dash for the frontier. The Frontier of Fear - A Glimpse into the Cold War Divide

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print titled "The Frontier of Fear" we are transported back to the 23rd of December, 1979. John Knight, with a heart full of holiday cheer, fearlessly calls out "Frohliche Weihnachten" (Merry Christmas) across the East/West German Border. However, his cheerful greeting is met with silence from the stoic and unsmiling guards who patrol this unnaturally divided land. This image captures a moment frozen in time - a stark reminder of the most unnatural division between two countries in our world's history. For two decades now, not once have these East German guards exchanged pleasantries or even uttered a simple "Good Morning" to their military counterparts on the other side. As we peer through binoculars at these watchful soldiers stationed on top of the Berlin Wall, we can't help but notice their fur hats and meticulously maintained uniforms. They stand as symbols of an oppressive regime that pays its conscripted soldiers a mere £3 per month and instructs them to shoot any comrade attempting to escape to freedom in the West. Surrounded by vicious dogs and armed with Russian-made Kalashnikov machine guns, these guards remain vigilant day after day. Their duty is clear: prevent their own countrymen from seeking liberty beyond this wire fence. Through this powerful photograph captured by Mirrorpix during those tense years amidst the Cold War era, we are reminded of both humanity's resilience and its capacity for division.
