The last of the Vernon Street triangle top shops, Hillfields, Coventry

The last of the Vernon Street triangle top shops, Hillfields, Coventry, soon to disappear as demolition contractors move in. The properties are the remains of a triangle of 67 three-storeyed houses built in the 19th century, in which the top floors were used as weavers workshops. Shafting ran through the top storeys linking to a comunal steam engine. The row of houses about to be demolished were earmarked for preservation, as an example of the tops shops era but Coventry City Council eventually decided that they could not be usefully modernised at a reasonable cost, and there are good examples of top shops at the firm of J. and J. Cash, Foleshill, which is preserved.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the last remnants of the historic Vernon Street triangle top shops in Hillfields, Coventry. These unique properties were once part of a triangular row of 67 three-storeyed houses built in the 19th century, where weavers used the top floors as their workshops. The fascinating aspect was that shafting ran through these upper storeys, connecting them to a communal steam engine. Sadly, this iconic piece of architecture is on the brink of disappearance as demolition contractors prepare to move in. Initially earmarked for preservation due to its significance as an example of the tops shops era, Coventry City Council ultimately deemed it impractical and costly to modernize these buildings. However, there is solace in knowing that examples showcasing this historical period still exist at J. and J. Cash firm in Foleshill, which have been successfully preserved. The photograph was taken on January 16th, 1973 by Mirrorpix during an era when Coventry's weaving industry thrived. It serves as a poignant reminder of how industries evolve over time and how important it is to preserve our architectural heritage for future generations. As we gaze upon this image from Memory Lane Prints, let us reflect on the rich history embedded within these walls and appreciate the efforts made towards preserving our cultural legacy.
