EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene of a Royal Aircraft Factory RE8 reconnaissance aircraft standing proudly on a grass airfield, circa 1918. The RE8 was a standard British reconnaissance and artillery spotting aircraft used extensively from mid-1917 until the end of the war. With over 4,000 built, these versatile planes played a crucial role in intelligence gathering and supporting ground forces. In this image, we see the RE8 from a right-side perspective, with its distinctive biplane wings and fabric-covered fuselage. The crew, dressed in their flying gear, are visible in their respective cockpits. The pilot sits comfortably in his seat, while the observer stands in the rear cockpit, leaning on the fuselage with his elbow for support. Both cockpits are equipped with essential instruments and controls, enabling the crew to carry out their duties effectively. This photograph is part of an album containing 96 images, documenting the service of Lt. William Charles Carter. Lt. Carter served with the Artists' Rifles The London Regiment from 1913 and later with 13 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps from 1917 to 1918. The RE8, armed with a synchronised forward-firing 303 inch Vickers machine gun and a Lewis gun on a Scarff ring in the observer's cockpit, was a formidable asset to the British forces during this period. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily life and operations of the brave men and women who flew these vital aircraft during World War I.
