EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the grand entrance to a Chivalric Church in the historic city of Rhodes, Greece. Dating back to the 1300s, this ancient structure stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the region. The Norman-style arches, adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures, frame the entranceway, leading to the sacred interior of the church. The church, once a part of the Knights Hospitaller's fortified complex known as the Kastello, was built by the Crusaders during their occupation of Rhodes. The Knights Hospitaller, an order dedicated to the care of the sick and the poor, played a significant role in the medieval world, and their influence is evident in the architectural style of the church. The entranceway is flanked by two massive stone pillars, each topped with a statue of a knight, adding to the imposing yet welcoming atmosphere of the church. The Templar Cross, the symbol of the Knights Templar, can be seen carved into the archway, further emphasizing the connection to the chivalric orders of the Middle Ages. The church, dedicated to Saint John of Jerusalem, has stood the test of time, bearing witness to the many historical events that have unfolded within its walls. The photograph, taken in the 1910s, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of knights, crusades, and the grandeur of medieval Europe.
