EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Robert von Spalart in 1810, offers a fascinating glimpse into the intricate world of Medieval weaponry. The image showcases an impressive array of weapons used during the Kolbenturnier, or Dull Sword Tournament, a popular event during the Middle Ages. The Kolben (302), or dull sword, is the central focus of the tournament, displayed prominently in the center of the print. Surrounding it are various other weapons that would have been used in conjunction with the Kolben. A pike (303) is depicted, a long polearm with a sharp point, ideal for thrusting attacks from a distance. The halberd (304) is also shown, a versatile weapon featuring a hooked blade and a pick at the other end, allowing for both slashing and piercing attacks. The partisan (305) is a polearm with a curved blade, perfect for chopping and hacking at opponents. Two types of hammers are displayed: a wooden battle hammer (306) and an iron battle hammer (307), both designed for delivering powerful blows. The lance with a crooked spike (308) is also present, an essential weapon for mounted combat. A variety of swords (309-312) are depicted, each with unique characteristics, such as the sabre, the claymore, and the longsword. Lastly, two daggers (313, 314) are shown, compact weapons ideal for close-quarters combat. This meticulously detailed engraving provides a valuable insight into the weaponry of the Medieval period, offering a captivating visual representation of the jousting and tournament culture that was so integral to this era.
