Construction of The Leviathan later Great Eastern 1855
Christened Leviathan in the early stages, thereafter always known as SS Great Eastern, an iron sailing steam ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and built by J. Scott Russell & Co work started in the spring of 1854 and lauched January 1858, at Millwall Iron Works in the Isle of Dogs, on the River Thames, London. Largest ship ever built at the time and had the capacity to carry 4, 000 passengers from England to Australia without refuelling.

This photograph captures the construction progress of the SS Great Eastern, also known as the Leviathan in its early stages, at the Millwall Iron Works in the Isle of Dogs on the River Thames in London during May 1855. Designed by the visionary Isambard Kingdom Brunel, this colossal iron sailing steamship was being built by J. Scott Russell & Co. The construction commenced in the spring of 1854, and the launch took place in January 1858. At the time, the SS Great Eastern was the largest ship ever built, with an impressive capacity to carry 4,000 passengers from England to Australia without the need for refueling.
