EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the grandeur and charm of Atlantic City, New Jersey's iconic Boardwalk Hall and Convention Center, as it looked in the 1930s. Originally conceived as a health resort, Atlantic City quickly gained popularity as a seaside destination and was affectionately known as "The World's Playground." The sprawling Boardwalk, with its iconic wooden planks, stretches out behind the imposing structure, leading to the sandy beach and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean. At the heart of Atlantic City's bustling tourism scene stood the magnificent Convention Hall, later known as Boardwalk Hall. Opened in 1929, this impressive auditorium and convention center played host to a variety of events, from political rallies and sporting events to the annual Miss America Pageant. The pageant, which made its debut in 1921, became a major attraction for tourists and helped to solidify Atlantic City's reputation as a premier destination for entertainment and leisure. In this photograph, taken around 1936, the grandeur of the Convention Hall is on full display. The building's imposing Art Deco façade, with its intricate detailing and towering columns, stands proudly against the backdrop of the ocean. The large marquee, adorned with the Miss America Pageant logo, draws the eye and adds a sense of excitement and anticipation. The photograph captures a bygone era of American seaside resorts, a time when Atlantic City was at the height of its popularity and the Miss America Pageant was a must-see event for tourists from across the United States and beyond.
