The Second Boer War was a conflict between the British Empire and the two independent Boer states, the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, over control of the mineral-rich region. The war began in October 1899 and lasted for three years, resulting in significant loss of life and destruction. The image of the bulldog, a symbol of British determination and tenacity, was widely used to represent the British war effort and the idea of 'British bulldog spirit'. The photograph was likely taken in 1900, after the capture of Pretoria by British forces in May of that year.
