EDITORS COMMENTS
"This engraving captures the thrilling finish of the 1869 Race for Doggett's Coat and Badge, an annual competition held on the River Thames between the Old Swan, London Bridge, and the White Swan, Chelsea. Established in the 17th century, this historic event is named after the Doggett family, who owned the Doggett's Coat and Badge public house in London. The race is open to watermen, who row in traditional Thames skiffs, and is held in August every year. In this image, George Wright, the victor of the 1869 race, is shown triumphantly crossing the finish line, his boat slicing through the water as the cheering crowds on the banks of the Thames look on. The Race for Doggett's Coat and Badge is an important part of the rich maritime history of London and continues to be a cherished tradition to this day."
