EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, we see a young Princess Marina of Greece, later to become the Duchess of Kent, at the age of nine years old. The image captures a moment of carefree childhood innocence as she sits on the sandy beach at Athens, with the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea gently lapping at her feet. The Duchess, who was born on November 26, 1906, was the daughter of Princess Helen of Russia and Prince Nicholas of Greece. During this period, her family took their afternoon tea on the beach, as evidenced by the tea set and cups visible in the background. The photograph, taken in 1915, offers a rare glimpse into the private life of this esteemed royal family. Princess Marina would go on to marry Prince George, Duke of Kent, on November 29, 1934. Their union produced three children: Prince Edward, Duke of Kent; Princess Alexandra, Lady Ogilvy; and Prince Michael of Kent. This photograph, therefore, holds a significant place in the history of the British monarchy, as it features the mother of the current Duke of Kent. The serene expression on Princess Marina's face, coupled with her elegant attire and the idyllic setting, make this photograph a captivating and historical portrait of a young royal. The image not only showcases the beauty and charm of the young princess but also offers a glimpse into the rich history and traditions of the Greek and British royal families.
