EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the renowned British actor-playwright Wilson Barrett in the title role of King Alfred, from his acclaimed production of "Alfred of Engle-Land," first performed at the Princes Theatre in Bristol on November 6, 1902, and later at the Adelphi Theatre in London on December 18, 1902. In this scene from Act IV, scene 1, titled "The Burning of the Cakes," King Alfred, unexpectedly dressed in a bold red cloak, engages with the cooks who have mistakenly burnt the cakes intended for the Danes as a peace offering. Wilson Barrett's powerful stage presence is evident in this image, making it a striking representation of his portrayal of this historic Christian king. This photograph is reproduced in an undated David Allen poster catalogue, no. 373.
