Glass Coaster : Battle of Cape Matapan
Home Decor from Mary Evans Picture Library
Battle of Cape Matapan
The British Royal Navy Mediterranean fleet, comprising aircraft carrier H.M.S. Formidable and battleships H.M.S. Warspite, Valiant and Barham, leave the port of Alexandria on 27 March 1941. A cryptographer at Bletchley Park had decoded messages suggesting that the Italian battle fleet would be on the move to attack convoys. Intercepting this group, the British ships would sink and damage several Italian warships in the Battle of Cape Matapan, off the Greek coast. Date: 27 March 1941
