EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of art titled "Joseph Henry Straffan Co Kildare 1744-51 Pen" by Artokoloro. The artwork, created with brown ink and traces of black chalk, measures approximately 12 5/16 x 8 3/8 inches (31.2 x 21.3 cm). The drawing depicts Joseph Henry Straffan, an Irishman who lived from 1744 to 1751 in County Kildare. Born into a wealthy family as the son of a banker, he inherited his father's fortune in Rome in the year 1741. Driven by his passion for art, Joseph embarked on two trips to Italy to study and collect artworks. Pier Leone Ghezzi, an Italian artist hailing from Comunanza near Ascoli Piceno and active in Rome between 1674 and 1755, is responsible for this intriguing caricature-like portrayal of young Joseph during his first trip to Italy in the years 1744-45. Ghezzi's artistic talent shines through as he captures the essence of Joseph's apparent youth. The second visit depicted in this artwork took place between the years 1750 and 1751 when Joseph was slightly older but still exuding youthful energy. This print allows us to appreciate Ghezzi's skillful handiwork while providing insight into the life and adventures of this fascinating Irishman.
