EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of pure joy and excitement on a Ferris wheel in Skegness, Lincolnshire. Taken during a Laing staff trip in the 1950s, it showcases a man and child enjoying the thrill of this classic fairground ride. In 1947, Laing revived their Area Outings for employees and their families after a seven-year hiatus. These trips were eagerly anticipated by staff members from the Midlands and South Yorkshire. In 1954 alone, there were seven outings planned over five weeks in May and June. Despite the wet weather depicted in this image, both the man and child are grinning from ear to ear as they ascend high above the seaside town. The Ferris wheel stands tall against the backdrop of an amusement park filled with other exhilarating rides. This snapshot not only represents leisure and recreation but also embodies the spirit of Laing's commitment to fostering camaraderie among its workforce. It serves as a testament to how companies like Laing valued their employees' well-being beyond just work. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this photograph is more than just nostalgia; it encapsulates an era when simple pleasures brought immense happiness to people's lives.
