EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the Arrol Gantry at Harland and Wolff Heavy Industries shipyard on Queens Island, Belfast. Standing tall at a staggering height of over 200 feet and stretching an impressive length of 840 feet, this colossal structure was a testament to engineering prowess in its time. Built by Sir William Arrol & Co of Glasgow according to Harland & Wolff's designs, it served as the backbone for constructing three iconic transatlantic liners - RMS Olympic, HMHS Britannic, and the ill-fated RMS Titanic. Taken in March 1909 by Henry Bedford Lemere from Bedford Lemere and Company, this image transports us back to an era when shipbuilding was at its zenith. The sheer scale of the gantry against the backdrop of bustling maritime activity showcases both the might and ambition that characterized Belfast's shipbuilding industry. As we gaze upon this historic photograph, we are reminded not only of remarkable feats achieved through human ingenuity but also of the tragic legacy associated with these ships. This print serves as a poignant reminder that behind every magnificent creation lies stories waiting to be told – tales encompassing innovation, craftsmanship, progress, but also heartbreaks etched into history forever.
