FILTON AIRFIELD, SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Rapid Concrete Breaking Co Ltd trucks at Filton Airfield during construction of a runway, with construction work in progress beyond.
Laing extended the runway westwards at Filton Airfield to accommodate the Bristol Brabazon airliner, which was being built at the airfield. Work began in July 1946 on the new runway, which was 2, 725 yards long and 100 yards wide. The work required the requisitioning and removal of Charlton village and a temporary flying strip was laid, for use while the new runway was under construction

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history at Filton Airfield, South Gloucestershire. The image showcases the hard work and determination of the Rapid Concrete Breaking Co Ltd trucks during the construction of a runway. Beyond the bustling activity, one can witness the ongoing progress of other construction work. During the 1940s, Filton Airfield underwent extensive renovations to accommodate the Bristol Brabazon airliner that was being built there. Laing took charge of extending the runway westwards to meet this purpose. In July 1946, they commenced their ambitious project which resulted in a remarkable 2,725-yard long and 100-yard wide runway. The magnitude of this endeavor required drastic measures such as requisitioning and removing Charlton village from its original location. To ensure uninterrupted air traffic flow during construction, a temporary flying strip was laid adjacent to where this photograph was taken. Preserved by Glover for Historic England, this print serves as an invaluable testament to human ingenuity and perseverance amidst challenging circumstances. It not only highlights the immense scale of infrastructure development but also pays homage to those who worked tirelessly behind-the-scenes. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded of how our past shapes our present and inspires us towards an even brighter future.
