EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling construction site at St Thomas Hospital in Lambeth, Greater London during the 1970s. Towering above the landscape are several impressive cranes, their steel frames reaching towards the sky like giants of industry. These cranes were an integral part of Phase II of a rebuilding project undertaken by Laing in 1969. The ambitious project aimed to transform St Thomas Hospital into a state-of-the-art medical facility, with new blocks including a ward block, operating suites, outpatients department, research institute, nurses home and nurses training school. The first phase had already been completed in 1966 by Sir Robert McAlpine and Sons. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness the sheer magnitude of this undertaking as workers maneuver heavy machinery amidst a sea of building materials. The energy and determination radiating from this scene is palpable. As we gaze upon this image today, it serves as a reminder not only of the progress made in healthcare infrastructure but also pays homage to those who dedicated themselves to improving medical facilities for future generations. This photograph stands as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of advancement.
