EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Shooting at the Butt, 1496" by Henry Shaw, takes us back to a medieval era where archery was not just a sport but also a legal obligation. The image showcases archers aiming their arbalests or cross-bows at the parish butt in hopes of winning the prize. It was mandatory for every township to erect these targets, and failure to practice on Sundays and holidays could result in fines. The scene depicted here is from a manuscript called "Imaginacion de vraye Noblesse" dating back to 1496. Henry Shaw's illustration beautifully captures the essence of this historical event with vibrant colors and intricate details. In addition to the archers and their weapons, we see various elements that transport us further into this medieval world - horses pulling carts along the road, men dressed in traditional attire riding alongside them. This print truly encapsulates both the spirit of competition and daily life during this time period. As we gaze upon this artwork, it serves as a reminder of how traditions have evolved over centuries while still retaining their significance. It allows us to appreciate not only the skillful artistry of Henry Shaw but also provides insight into an important aspect of medieval society – archery as both a sport and an essential form of defense during times of war.
