EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the capture of Saint Louis and his brothers during the Seventh Crusade in 1250. The image showcases King Louis IX of France, along with his brothers Alphonse and Charles, as they are taken prisoner by the Mamelukes in Egypt. The photograph transports us back to the medieval era, where we witness the imposing fortification and castle gate that served as their captors' stronghold. It is a stark reminder of the religious conflicts that defined this tumultuous period. Despite being held captive, King Louis IX's reputation for piety and compassion shines through even in this frozen moment. Known for his kindness towards the poor, he would later be canonized by Pope Boniface VIII in 1297. This remarkable woodcut print not only captures an important historical event but also serves as a testament to human resilience amidst adversity. It reminds us of the sacrifices made by those who fought for their beliefs during these crusades. As we gaze upon this powerful image, it prompts reflection on themes such as faith, war, captivity, and leadership. It serves as a visual window into an era long gone but still resonates with its echoes today.
