EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic image of Lord Kitchener, a renowned British Field Marshal, diplomat, and statesman. Taken around 1910 by Bassano Ltd, this portrait showcases the distinguished features of Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850-1916). Lord Kitchener's military achievements were remarkable. He successfully regained control of Sudan for Egypt after his victory at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. During the Boer War from 1899 to 1902, he served as commander of British forces. In addition to his military prowess, Lord Kitchener held the position of War Minister from 1914 until his untimely demise in 1916. The significance of this portrait extends beyond its historical context. It became widely recognized during World War I when it was used on an influential army recruitment poster. This powerful image symbolized patriotism and encouraged men to join the war effort. Tragically, Lord Kitchener met his end when HMS Hampshire sank due to a German mine in the North Atlantic while en route to Russia in 1916. Preserved within "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects" by W. Stanley Macbean Knight (Caxton Publishing Company Limited), this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of Lord Kitchener's contributions and sacrifices during one of history's most tumultuous periods - World War I.
