Looking across the Sacred Lake to the great temple at Karnak, Thebes, Egypt, 1905. Artist: Underwood & Underwood
Looking across the Sacred Lake to the great temple at Karnak, Thebes, Egypt, 1905. This sacred lake, now the wallowing pool for the buffalos of the neighbouring peasantry, has been the scene of the most gorgeous pageants when the victorious conquerors of Syria returned to celebrate their triumphs in the state temple. In his glittering barge, resplendent with gold and precious stones, the god was borne around this lake, followed by a long line of gaily decorated boats carrying the king, the white-robed priests and crowds of the royal favourites... while lines of wretched captives stood waiting to be led into the temple, there to be sacrificed. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

Looking across the Sacred Lake to the great temple at Karnak, Thebes, Egypt, 1905
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back in time to the ancient city of Thebes in Egypt. Captured by Underwood & Underwood in 1905, it showcases a mesmerizing view across the Sacred Lake towards the magnificent temple at Karnak. Once a site of grandeur and opulence, this sacred lake now serves as a wallowing pool for buffalos owned by local peasants. However, its historical significance cannot be overlooked. In centuries past, it witnessed splendid pageants where victorious conquerors from Syria returned to celebrate their triumphs in the state temple. Imagine standing on its banks and witnessing an awe-inspiring procession unfold before your eyes - a glittering barge carrying a god adorned with gold and precious stones gliding gracefully through these waters. Following closely behind were beautifully decorated boats carrying kings, priests draped in white robes, and crowds of royal favorites. Yet amidst this grandeur stood lines of wretched captives awaiting their fate - sacrifice within the walls of the temple. This juxtaposition between splendor and suffering is both haunting and thought-provoking. Through stereoscopic photography techniques employed by Underwood & Underwood for their series "Egypt Through the Stereoscope" this image brings history alive with depth and detail. It offers us a glimpse into ancient Egyptian culture while reminding us of our shared human experiences throughout time. Let this photograph transport you to another era as you contemplate the rich tapestry that is Egypt's religious heritage intertwined with its geographical features.
