EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable Jean Bouin, a French soldier and athlete in 1912. Bouin, born in 1888, showcased his incredible talent at both the 1908 Summer Olympics in London and the 1912 Games in Stockholm. It was during the latter that he secured a well-deserved silver medal in the prestigious 5000 metres event. Beyond his athletic achievements, Bouin's life took an unfortunate turn as he became a sergeant in the French Army during World War I. Tragically, he met his untimely demise near Saint-Michel, Marne while serving his country. In this portrait, we see Bouin exuding confidence with a warm smile on his face. His neatly groomed mustache adds to his distinguished appearance. Dressed smartly in a coat or greatcoat and holding a towel draped over one arm, he embodies both athleticism and military discipline. The monochrome aesthetic of this photograph adds depth to its historical significance. Preserved within Album de Photographies: Dans L'Intimité de Personnages Illustres (1855-1915), published by Editions MD based in Paris, it offers us an intimate glimpse into the life of this extraordinary individual. Jean Bouin's legacy lives on through this image; it serves as a poignant reminder of not only his sporting prowess but also of those who sacrificed their lives during World War I for their respective countries.
