EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Halwells (aka Holwell's) Memorial in Calcutta, taken around 1910. The monument stands as a solemn tribute to the victims of one of history's most tragic events - the Black Hole of Calcutta. John Zephaniah Holwell, an extraordinary survivor, is forever remembered through this memorial. The original structure was erected at Old Fort William to honor those who suffered under the rule of Nawab Suraj-ud-Daulah in Bengal. However, in 1902, a replica replaced it and was subsequently relocated to a less prominent position. The image captures the exterior view of this urban landmark against a vibrant backdrop. People bustling about add life and context to the scene. The colors evoke a sense of warmth and vibrancy that contrasts with the darker historical narrative associated with this site. This photograph not only serves as a visual record but also symbolizes conflict and imperialism prevalent during that era. The presence of English text on the building exterior further emphasizes its significance within British colonial history. Preserved by The Print Collector, this postcard-like print provides us with an intriguing glimpse into early 20th-century Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta). It invites contemplation on themes such as memory, remembrance, and resilience while shedding light on India's complex past.
