Flight of Matilda from Oxford, 1142

Flight of Matilda from Oxford, 1142. Stephen (1096-1154), the last Norman King of England, reigned from 1135 to 1154. He supported the claim to the throne of Matilda (1102-1167), the daughter of Henry I, before usurping her when Henry died in 1135 and claiming the throne for himself. England descended into a period of civil war. Stephen was captured after he was defeated by Matildas army at the Battle of Lincoln in 1141 but was freed in an exchange for the captive Robert, Earl of Gloucester, Matildas most able lieutenant. Matildas time on the throne was brief, as a rebellion forced her to flee London. Stephen regained the throne and Matilda was besieged in Oxford, but escaped to Wallingford, camouflaged against the snow by wearing a white cloak. The conflict dragged on until 1148 when Matilda returned to France after the Earl of Gloucester died. Eventually, in 1154, her son was crowned king as Henry II after Stephen died

Flight of Matilda from Oxford, 1142

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a pivotal moment in English history during the 12th century. The image depicts the audacious escape of Matilda, daughter of Henry I and rightful heir to the throne, from besieged Oxford. In this scene, she cunningly disguises herself against the wintry backdrop by wearing a white cloak, blending seamlessly with the snow-covered landscape. The print showcases not only the political turmoil that engulfed England but also highlights Matilda's resilience and determination as she flees from her rival, King Stephen. This conflict marked a dark period of civil war as both monarchs fought for control over the kingdom. The artist skillfully portrays various figures surrounding Matilda - men and women alike - symbolizing their loyalty to her cause. Towering structures in the background hint at both power struggles within medieval society and provide an atmospheric setting for this dramatic event. While ultimately unsuccessful in claiming her rightful place on the throne during this particular attempt, Matilda's legacy endured through her son Henry II who would later become king. This print serves as a poignant reminder of one woman's fight for power amidst turbulent times in British history.
