. This print from the Hulton Archive takes us on a journey back to the early 19th century, showcasing six remarkable engravings of guns. Each firearm represents a unique chapter in the evolution of weaponry during that era. Starting from the top, we are introduced to a matchlock, an ancient yet revolutionary invention that utilized a slow-burning wick to ignite gunpowder. Moving down, we encounter a wheel-lock arquebus, which employed an intricate mechanism involving spinning wheels and sparks for ignition. The next two engravings feature snaphaunce revolvers and fowling-pieces respectively. These firearms demonstrate advancements in both design and functionality with their improved firing mechanisms. Continuing our descent through time, we come across a flint fowling-piece—a testament to the ingenuity of using flint as an ignition source. Finally, at the bottom lies a percussion fowling-piece; its innovative percussion cap system marked another significant leap forward in firearms technology.
