Thomas Cranmer, leader of the english Reformation
" Engraving of Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556)Engraved in 1829 by William Holl the younger (1771-1838) from the original picture in the collection at Lambeth Palace.Edited and published by William Mackenzie, London, Edinburgh & Glasgow in 1850.Digital restoration by PictoreThomas Cranmer was a leader of the English Reformation and Archbishop of Canterbury during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI and, for a short time, Mary I. He helped build the case for the annulment of Henrys marriage to Catherine of Aragon, which was one of the causes of the separation of the English Church from union with the Holy See. Along with Thomas Cromwell, he supported the principle of Royal Supremacy, in which the king was considered sovereign over the Church within his realm. The portrait and figure engraver William Holl the Younger was born in February 1807 at Plaistow, Essex. He was the eldest of the four sons of William Holl the Elder (1771-1838) who taught him engraving, in stipple at first, but later in line on steel. His first independent work was an engraving of Thomas Cranmer made in May 1829"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable engraving of Thomas Cranmer, the influential leader of the English Reformation. Created in 1829 by the talented portrait and figure engraver William Holl the Younger, this piece has been digitally restored by Pictore to preserve its timeless beauty. Thomas Cranmer played a pivotal role as Archbishop of Canterbury during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, and briefly Mary I. His involvement in building a case for Henry's annulment from Catherine of Aragon contributed to the separation between the English Church and the Holy See. Alongside Thomas Cromwell, Cranmer championed the principle of Royal Supremacy, which emphasized that within his realm, the king held sovereignty over matters concerning religion. The intricate details captured in this engraving bring Cranmer's dignified presence to life. Every line etched with precision portrays his wisdom and determination as he navigated through turbulent times in England's religious history. The original picture from Lambeth Palace collection serves as an invaluable reference for this exceptional artwork. As we gaze upon this stunning depiction of Thomas Cranmer, we are reminded not only of his significant contributions but also of how art can immortalize historical figures. This print is more than just a visual representation; it is a testament to both artistic skill and our collective memory.
