EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite portrait of Bonne d'Artois, Countess of Nevers and Rethel, Duchess of Burgundy. Created by an unknown artist from the Flemish School in the 16th century, this red chalk on paper masterpiece is now housed in the Bibliotheque Municipale in Arras, France. Bonne d'Artois (1396-1425) was a woman of great influence and stature during her time. As the second wife of Philip III the Good (1396-1467), also known as Philippe le Bon, she held prestigious titles such as Comtesse and Duchesse. Her regal presence is beautifully captured in this half-length portrait. The artist's attention to detail is evident in every stroke; from Bonne's delicate veil cascading down her shoulders to her intricately adorned headdress. With hands crossed gracefully over her chest, she exudes elegance and poise that befits her aristocratic status. Although it remains uncertain whether Jacques Le Boucq (d. 1573) was responsible for this remarkable artwork, its attribution to him adds another layer of intrigue to its historical significance. As we gaze upon this stunning portrayal, we are transported back in time to witness a moment frozen forever - a testament to both Bonne d'Artois' enduring legacy and the artistic prowess of the Flemish School.
