EDITORS COMMENTS
This triptych, titled "Triptych of the Calvary" is a masterpiece by the renowned Netherlandish artist Rogier van der Weyden. The left panel of this altarpiece showcases two distinct scenes: the Nativity in the upper section and Saint Francis of Assisi, possibly accompanied by Saint Julian the Hospitaller, in the lower section. In the upper part of this panel, we witness a tender depiction of the Nativity. The Virgin Mary kneels before her newborn child, Jesus, while angels with magnificent wings hover above them. This serene scene exudes a sense of divine tranquility and awe-inspiring beauty. Moving to the lower portion of this artwork, we encounter Saint Francis of Assisi standing gracefully alongside what might be Saint Julian the Hospitaller. Saint Francis is recognizable by his humble appearance and his association with nature; here he holds a falcon on one hand and carries a money bag on his belt. These symbols represent his devotion to poverty and charity. The intricate details in this oil-on-panel painting are truly remarkable. Van der Weyden's skillful brushwork brings each figure to life, capturing their emotions and expressions with great precision. Created during the Northern Renaissance period in 15th century Belgium, this triptych exemplifies early Netherlandish art at its finest. Currently housed at Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp, Belgium, this print allows us to appreciate van der Weyden
