EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the tragic love story of Pyramus and Thisbe, as portrayed by Niklaus Manuel Deutsch in 1513-14. The mixed media on canvas artwork measures 151.5x161 cm and is housed in the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland. Based on Ovid's Metamorphoses, this painting captures the heart-wrenching tale of two young lovers from Babylon who are forbidden to be together due to their parents' rivalry. Through a crack in the wall that separates their homes, Pyramus and Thisbe exchange whispered declarations of love and plan a secret meeting. However, fate intervenes cruelly when Thisbe arrives at their rendezvous spot before Pyramus. Startled by the sight of a lioness with bloodstained jaws, she flees in fear but accidentally leaves behind her veil. When Pyramus finally arrives and discovers the abandoned veil, he mistakenly believes that his beloved has been killed by a wild beast. Overwhelmed with grief, Pyramus takes his own life with his sword under a mulberry tree. Tragically, upon returning to find her lover's lifeless body beneath the same tree, Thisbe cannot bear to live without him and ends her own life using his sword as well. Deutsch's masterful portrayal of this timeless tale showcases elements such as landscape details reminiscent of Mesopotamia and classical themes prevalent during Northern Renaissance art. The painting serves as an evocative reminder of love thwarted by circumstance and highlights both human fallibility and the enduring power of tragedy throughout history.
