The Colonnade of St. Peter s, Rome, during the Conclave, c. 1769 (oil on canvas)

499895 The Colonnade of St. Peter s, Rome, during the Conclave, c.1769 (oil on canvas)
by Robert, Hubert (1733-1808); 56x47.5 (framed) 42.6x33.4 (unframed) cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Hubert Robert studied and worked in Italy from 1754-1765. Upon returning to Paris, he entered the Royal Academy as an architectural painter and full member in 1766. His time in Italy would prove to be influential and classical architectural subjects would dominate his subsequent oeuvre.
Interior of the Colonnade of St. Peters is based on a drawing dated from 1758, the same year that Pope Clement XIII Rezzonico was elected. Given his interest in classical subjects, Robert has antiquated his subject by aging the condition of the columns and including a soldier dressed in ancient Roman armor. Similarly, Robert imaginatively portrays The Grotto of Posillipo. Measuring over 2000 feet in length, this tunnel was carved from the volcanic rock by ancient Romans to connect Naples with Pozzuoli. While this passageway was improved by repaving and reinforcing the arches during the reign of Charles III of Naples (1734-59), this structure was never the grand tunnel Robert depicts with coffered vaults and engaged columns.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Colonnade of St. Peter's, Rome, during the Conclave" painted by Hubert Robert in approximately 1769. The artwork, which measures 56x47.5 cm when framed and 42.6x33.4 cm without a frame, is currently housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. Hubert Robert was a renowned French artist who studied and worked in Italy from 1754 to 1765 before returning to Paris and becoming a full member of the Royal Academy as an architectural painter. His time spent in Italy greatly influenced his artistic style, with classical architectural subjects dominating much of his later work. "The Colonnade of St. Peter's" depicts an interior view based on a drawing from 1758 when Pope Clement XIII Rezzonico was elected. In this piece, Robert has deliberately aged the condition of the columns and included a soldier dressed in ancient Roman armor to give it an antiquated feel. Additionally, this artwork also features another imaginative portrayal by Robert - "The Grotto of Posillipo". This tunnel was originally carved by ancient Romans to connect Naples with Pozzuoli but underwent improvements during Charles III's reign (1734-59). However, Robert envisions it with coffered vaults and engaged columns that were never part of its actual grandeur. Overall, this painting exemplifies Hubert Robert's mastery in capturing classical architecture while infusing his own creative interpretations into historical scenes.
