Charles Gleyre (1808-1874) was a Swiss painter and teacher who is best known for his influence on the development of the Impressionist movement. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was exposed to Neo-Classicism and Romanticism. His works were characterized by an emphasis on color and light, as well as a focus on landscape painting. He also taught many of the leading figures of the Impressionist movement, including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Gleyre's works are often seen as transitional between Neoclassicism and Impressionism due to his use of both traditional techniques such as chiaroscuro lighting effects with more modern approaches such as broken brushwork.
