"The Spanish Armada: A Historic Naval Encounter" In the year 1588, a formidable fleet known as the Spanish Armada set its sights on England's shores. This pivotal moment in history is beautifully depicted in John Seymour Lucas' painting, "The Armada in sight, Plymouth hoe, 1880. " The artwork captures the tension and anticipation felt by both sides as they prepared for battle. The defeat suffered by Don Pedro Valdes aboard his galleon is symbolized by an English playing card depicting this significant victory over Spain. This three-of-diamonds card serves as a reminder that even against overwhelming odds, triumph can be achieved. A line engraving from the 16th century showcases one crucial battle between the Spanish Armada and English Royal Navy in the treacherous waters of the English Channel.
