EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a reproduction tapestry depicting the historic event of the Spanish Armada on July 21. The tapestry beautifully depicts the English and Spanish fleets positioned in the Channel off the coast of Cornwall and Devon, with Queen Elizabeth I's coat of arms proudly displayed. The artwork is adorned with an ornate border featuring eight portraits of esteemed commanders from the English fleet, including Charles Howard, Lord High Admiral and commander-in-chief against the Spanish Armada. Above and below these portraits are intricately designed ships bows embellished with spears, banners, and accompanied by playful putti blowing trumpets, shells, writing, and playing drums. Flanking either side are four enchanting putti near a triumph or memorial column. Two putti gracefully decorate this column with garlands while another diligently records events in a book. The fourth putto holds a sword along with an ouroboros symbolizing eternity as it bites its own tail. Additional elements within this remarkable composition include two eagles clutching lightning bolts representing power and strength; four winds personified as human faces blowing with rounded cheeks; two lions holding columns or tridents; and a prominent coat of arms displaying the Anchor of Hope - symbolizing resilience - which belongs to England's Admiralty. This extraordinary piece forms part of a book dedicated to chronicling the Spanish Armada's historical significance. It encompasses various aspects such as naval battles (including Charles Howard's leadership), tapestries created to commemorate these events, coats of arms signifying state symbols, ship exteriors like bows depicted alongside cupids known as amores or amoretti. Overall, this print captures not only an awe-inspiring work of art but also serves as a testament to one of history's most significant naval conflicts – forever etching itself into our collective memory.
