Sir John Alexander Hammerton was a renowned artist and creator of various captivating illustrations that depicted significant moments in history. One of his notable works includes a portrayal of the 8th Army commander, Bernard Law Montgomery, in 1942. With his artistic skills, Hammerton captured the essence and strength of this influential figure. In another piece, he immortalized the bravery and determination of hooded British Territorials as they fearlessly charged towards German trenches at Loos on September 25th, 1915. The intensity and courage displayed by these soldiers are vividly portrayed through Hammerton's brushstrokes. Hammerton also celebrated victories with his artistry, such as "The Campbells are Coming. " where he depicted brave pipers playing Highland regiments to victory in 1917. This artwork beautifully captures the spirit and pride associated with Scottish military traditions. Among his collection is an illustration showcasing the historic landing from the River Clyde at Seddul Bahr during Gallipoli on April 25th. Through this piece, Hammerton commemorated a crucial moment in history when troops embarked on their mission amidst challenging circumstances. Maps were also part of Sir John Alexander Hammerton's repertoire; one example being a map illustrating the Russian retreat from Galicia in summer 1915. His attention to detail allowed viewers to understand complex military strategies employed during World War I. Another map created by him showcased the Russian invasion of East Prussia in 1915. These maps served as valuable resources for understanding historical events while appreciating Hammerton's talent for visual storytelling. Hammerton didn't limit himself to war-related subjects alone; he also shed light on other significant events like "The Zeppelin Bombardment of Antwerp" which occurred in August 1814 against international conventions set forth by The Hague Convention. His expertise extended beyond battlefields too; he crafted detailed maps highlighting territories like German Cameroon Colony (1916) and Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula (1917).
