Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, also known as Barnevelt, was a prominent figure in Dutch history during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Born in 1547 and passing away in 1619, he played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of his time. One notable event was his meeting with the Earl of Leicester between 1585 and 1587. This encounter, depicted by an unknown artist around 1870, showcased Van Oldenbarnevelt's diplomatic skills and influence on international relations. Van Oldenbarnevelt was a strong advocate for freedom, as symbolized by an allegorical figure representing true freedom. His commitment to this ideal is evident not only through his actions but also through various portraits that capture him with determination and conviction. His wife Maria van Utrecht, portrayed alongside him in one painting from the mid-1500s to early-1600s, stood by his side throughout their lives together. Their partnership exemplified strength and unity. In another portrait attributed to Cornelis Saftleven, Van Oldenbarnevelt is shown deep in prayer before facing challenging times ahead. This image reflects his unwavering faith even during moments of uncertainty. However, not all aspects of Van Oldenbarnevelt's life were positive. A satire trial aimed at discrediting him showcases the opposition he faced from those who disagreed with his policies or feared his influence. Despite these challenges, Van Oldenbarnevelt served as Council Pensioner and left an indelible mark on Dutch politics. His legacy continues to be remembered through various prints such as the pamphlet entitled "Verclaringhe van den Gouden Blaes-balck Verclaringhe" published in 1618. Johan van Oldenbarnevelt remains an important historical figure whose contributions shaped Dutch society during a critical period of its development.
