Cetewayo, also known as Cetshwayo kaMpande, was the last Zulu King who reigned during the 19th century in South Africa. His rule over the powerful Zulu Kingdom began in 1883 and marked a significant period in history. However, his reign was not without challenges. The Zulu Wars erupted during his time as king, with battles like Ulundi becoming iconic moments of resistance against British colonialism. In these conflicts, figures like Dabulamanzi, Cetewayo's brother, played crucial roles. Despite facing captivity at one point, Cetewayo remained a symbol of resilience for his people. Images captured him in various settings: from being held captive to arriving at Sir Garnet Wolseley's camp after capture and even sending peace messengers during the war. The restoration became an important event that showcased both political and cultural significance. It represented a recognition of indigenous leadership and traditions by European powers. In some depictions, such as the color lithograph portraying "Cetewayo civilised, " we witness attempts to portray him through Western lenses while he resided in Cape Town Castle. These engravings highlight how perceptions of power can be shaped by different perspectives. Ultimately, Cetewayo's story is one of strength and endurance amidst turbulent times. He left an indelible mark on South African history as a leader who fought for his people's rights and sovereignty until his death in 1884.
