Animal migration is a fascinating phenomenon that spans across the globe, as depicted in the Map of the world according to Strabo. Just like Attila, King of the Huns, who led his people on epic journeys, animals embark on incredible migrations every year. Take for instance the Swift (Apus apus), an adult bird known for its remarkable long-distance flights. These agile creatures traverse vast distances with ease, just like European Starlings or Common Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), which travel in massive flocks creating mesmerizing aerial displays. Not all migratory journeys are airborne though; some species prefer land and sea routes. The Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus), also known as Common Pied Oystercatcher, gracefully navigates coastal regions during its annual migration. Similarly, the Common Scoter (Melanitta nigra), a large male sea duck, braves challenging waters to reach its breeding grounds. Other birds choose more secretive paths during their migrations. The Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) stealthily moves through forests and wetlands while Moorhens (Gallinula chloropus) elegantly glide along waterways. Meanwhile, high above them soars the majestic Gray Heron (Ardea cinerea), a large wading bird showcasing grace even in flight. On land, vibrant Yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella) make their presence known with their striking plumage as they migrate across fields and meadows. Joining them is the Curlew (Numenius arquata), an adult bird renowned for its haunting call echoing over marshes and estuaries. Finally, we have the Hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes). This adult songbird embarks on seasonal movements through woodlands with determination and resilience.
