Illustration for the frontispiece of the Dictionnaire de l'Academie francaise (Dictionary of the French Academy), the first official dictionary of the French language, completed by the French Academy in 1694. King Louis XIV (1638-1715) is crowned with a garland while the "Dictionary of the French Academy" is celebrated with flowers by three women aided by genii. Engraving by Huyot after the drawing of Jean-Baptiste Corneille (1649-1695), engraved by Jean Mariette (1660-1742) and Gerard Edelinck (1640-1707). XVIIme siecle: lettres, sciences et arts, France 1590-1700 (17th century: letters, sciences and arts), by Paul Lacroix. Published in Paris by Librairie de Firmin-Didot et Cie, 1882.
