EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical artifact from the STEAM Museum of the GWR - a GWR Salvage Corps leaflet dating back to 1940 during World War II. In this crucial period, the Great Western Railway (GWR) demonstrated their unwavering commitment to salvaging essential resources such as paper and other materials. The leaflet, distributed by General Manager James Milne in August 1940, aimed to encourage employees to join forces with the GWR Salvage Corp. The vintage leaflet urged staff members to actively participate in salvage efforts by collecting various items including metals, timber, glass, rubber, bones, and even foodstuffs. A powerful quote featured inside boldly proclaimed "Salvage feeds the guns that fight the Huns" serving as a poignant reminder of their collective mission against Germany's forces. This remarkable relic not only sheds light on an important aspect of wartime history but also highlights early initiatives towards recycling and resource conservation. It symbolizes how individuals came together during challenging times for a greater cause - supporting their country's defense while minimizing waste. As we reflect upon this photograph print today, it serves as a testament to human resilience and unity in times of adversity. It reminds us that even small contributions can make a significant impact when we work together towards common goals – whether it be defending our nation or preserving our planet through sustainable practices like recycling.
