Framed Print of Athenian Merchants and Scale, 6th Century BC

Weights and measures were among the earliest tools invented by man. Early Babylonian and Egyptian records, and the Bible, indicate that length was first measured with the forearm, hand, or finger and that time was measured by the periods of the sun, moon, and other heavenly bodies. When it was necessary to compare the capacities of containers such as gourds or clay or metal vessels, they were filled with plant seeds that were then counted to measure the volumes. With the development of scales as a means for weighing, seeds and stones served as standards. Black-figure pottery painting, also known as the black-figure style or black-figure ceramic is one of the styles of painting on antique Greek vases. Figures and ornaments were painted on the body of the vessel using shapes and colors reminiscent of silhouettes. Attica (historical region of Greece, which includes Athens) was the home of well-known artists. Photograph original captioned: From a very early time Athenian artists produced exceptional pottery ware, such as this example of Attic black-figure ware, which predates the period of Pericles by a hundred years.
