Framed Print of Bone growth at 2, 6, 19 years
Bone growth in hands. Computer enhanced digitized color X-ray of the bone growth of a male human hand at different ages. At left, at two-and-a-half years of age, wide spaces occur between the finger joints of carpal (palm), metacarpal (first finger joint), and phalanges (finger) bones. In such youth these spaces consist of cartilage unseen on X-ray, with proper bone calcification occurring only in the middle of long bones. At center, at six-and-a-half years of age, calcification has progressed and the spaces between joins have narrowed. In the 19 year-old adult hand (at right), the finger long bones are fully calcified to their extremities, and the joints have closed. © Scott Camazine / Science Source

A remarkable journey of growth and transformation. At two-and-a-half years old, a young hand is a canvas of possibility with wide spaces between finger joints waiting to be filled in by the gradual process of bone calcification. Six-and-a-half years later, this same hand begins to take shape as cartilage starts to solidify into sturdy bone structures. And then at nineteen, fully formed bones stand strong and connected forming the foundation for a lifetime of movement and expression.
