Venices MOSE flood barrier

Venices MOSE flood barrier, computer model. The MOSE project is designed to protect Venice, Italy, from extreme floods. Six barriers, each measuring 5x20x30 metres, are seen here. A total of 79 will be built across the three inlets to the lagoon surrounding the island of Venice. The barriers are normally full of water and lie flat on the seabed. When the water level rises, air is pumped into the barriers, and they rise on hinges to form a row. They are designed to prevent floods up to 2 metres high. Such extreme floods, mainly due to winds and tides, are predicted to worsen due to global warming. Initial MOSE construction began in 2003, and the gates will be built from 2006-2011

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive MOSE flood barrier in Venice, Italy. The computer model depicts six barriers, each measuring 5x20x30 meters, which will be part of a total of 79 barriers built across the three inlets to protect the city from extreme floods. Designed as a defense against rising water levels caused by winds and tides exacerbated by global warming, these barriers are normally submerged and lie flat on the seabed. When floodwaters threaten Venice, air is pumped into the barriers causing them to rise on hinges and form an impenetrable row. This innovative technology aims to prevent floods up to 2 meters high, preserving this iconic Venetian landscape for generations to come. The MOSE project commenced its construction journey in 2003 and is set for completion between 2006-2011. It represents a remarkable feat of engineering and marine preservation that combines cutting-edge research with environmental consciousness. As climate change continues to pose threats worldwide, this ambitious plan serves as a beacon of hope for coastal cities vulnerable to flooding. By blocking off potential ingress points during high tides or storm surges, these floating gates act as guardians safeguarding Venice's lagoon from devastating inundation. This awe-inspiring illustration not only highlights technological advancements but also emphasizes our collective responsibility towards protecting our environment from the impacts of climate change. Through projects like MOSE, we can strive towards harmonizing human progress with nature's delicate balance while ensuring future generations can continue cherishing the beauty of places like Venice.
