Tinted TEM of adenovirus

False colour transmission electron micrograph of an Adeno virus, cause of infection to the upper respiratory tract, the symptoms of which resemble a common cold. The virus contains double-stranded (DNA) surrounded by a protein capsid (coat), which is composed of 252 capsomers (subunits seen as tiny ovals) arranged into an icosahedron, or 20 faced figure. 12 of these capsomers are surrounded by five neighbours & are called pentons. They consist of a base and a spikelike projection (seen here). To reproduce viruses must take control of the genetic machinery of another cell (in this case animal cells). Mag: X29, 200 at 35mm size. Original is BW print m055/013

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-color transmission electron micrograph of an adenovirus, the notorious culprit behind upper respiratory tract infections that mimic the symptoms of a common cold. The virus is depicted as a mesmerizing 20-faced figure known as an icosahedron, composed of 252 capsomers or tiny oval-shaped subunits. Among these capsomers, twelve are distinct pentons surrounded by five neighboring units and characterized by their spike-like projections visible in this image. The adenovirus possesses a double-stranded DNA core enveloped within a protein capsid or coat. Its genetic material is responsible for hijacking the cellular machinery of host animal cells to reproduce itself efficiently. This intricate process allows the virus to spread and cause infection throughout its unfortunate host's body. With magnification at X29 and captured at a size of 35mm, this black-and-white print from Science Photo Library offers us an extraordinary glimpse into the microscopic world of viruses. It serves as a reminder of how such minuscule entities can have significant impacts on our health and well-being. Explore the fascinating field of virology through this remarkable visual representation, delving into concepts like capsids, biology, micro-biology, and more. Let your curiosity be sparked by this stunning photograph while appreciating both its scientific value and aesthetic appeal.
