Tinted SEM of Shetland wool from knitted pullover

False colour scanning electron micrograph of Shetland wool taken from a knitted pullover. Wool is the hair of sheep & reveals a similar structure as human hair. The cuticle or outer layer (visible here) is scaly. Beneath this is the cortex, the bulk of hair & which contains hair pigments. At the centre is the medulla, which may be hollow. Hair cells are dead except for a layer at the base of the root. Cells here continue to divide forming new cells while pushing the older ones upward. Wool serves as a protection against inclement weather. Magnification: X143 at 35mm size, & X1000 at 10X8 inch size. Original is BW print H120/038

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Shetland wool, extracted from a knitted pullover. Through false colour scanning electron micrograph technology, we are granted an up-close and personal view of this remarkable material. Similar in structure to human hair, Shetland wool unravels its secrets layer by layer. The outermost layer, known as the cuticle, is revealed here with its scaly texture. Just beneath lies the cortex, constituting the bulk of the hair and housing various pigments that give it color. At the very core resides the medulla, which may possess a hollow center. Although these hair cells are lifeless except for a small portion at their root's base, they continue to play an essential role in growth. The cells at this base divide continuously while pushing older ones upward—a testament to nature's perpetual cycle. Beyond its biological significance, Shetland wool serves as more than just clothing material; it acts as a protective shield against harsh weather conditions. This image was captured using high magnification lenses—X143 at 35mm size and X1000 at 10X8 inch size—allowing us to appreciate every minute detail within this black-and-white print (H120/038) from Science Photo Library.
