Framed Prints From Science Photo Library

Framed Print of Soviet rocket scientists

Sergei Korolev (1907-1966), pioneering Soviet rocket scientist, with other scientists from GIRD, the Moscow Group for Reactive Motion. Korolev is second from left. After developing an interest in rocketry, Korolev formed GIRD who, in 1933, launched the USSRs first liquid-fueled rocket. It was powered by a gasoline and oxygen mixture, reaching a height of 400 metres and landing 150 metres from the launch site. After the Second World War Korolev worked developing rockets, both for space exploration and for military use. His most famous was Vostok 1, which carried the first man into space.
