Shoveler duck, historical artwork
Shoveler. Historical artwork of a male shoveler duck (Anas clypeata). This duck inhabits wetlands and inland waters across much of the northern hemisphere, and northern populations migrate south for the winter. The shoveler feeds mainly by filtering water through bristles on its bill, which allows it to capture small crustaceans, insect larvae and plant matter. In addition to this, it also eats snails, beetles and small fish. The shoveler may reach a length of over 50 centimetres. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print showcases a historical artwork of a male shoveler duck, beautifully captured by the talented artist Archibald Thorburn. The shoveler duck, scientifically known as Anas clypeata, is a common sight in wetlands and inland waters across the northern hemisphere. During winter, these ducks migrate south to escape the harsh conditions. The shoveler's distinctive feature is its bill, which it uses to filter water and capture small crustaceans, insect larvae, and plant matter. It also has an appetite for snails, beetles, and even small fish. With a length that can exceed 50 centimeters, this species truly stands out among its feathered counterparts. Archibald Thorburn's detailed illustration brings this magnificent bird to life on paper. His skillful use of lines and shading captures every intricate detail of the shoveler's plumage with precision and finesse. As we admire this artwork from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of the rich history behind our understanding of nature's wonders. This piece not only celebrates the beauty of wildlife but also pays homage to one man's dedication to capturing its essence through art.
