Framed Print of Mosquito head, SEM

Mosquito head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a mosquito, showing its large compound eyes. Each eye consists of many lenses (spheres) known as ommatidia. Each ommatidium is a simple eye that sends a signal to the mosquitos brain. The brain combines the thousands of images to form a mosaic view of the world. The image produced is not sharp but is excellent at detecting movement. Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © STEVE GSCHMEISSNER/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
