At the center of the photograph, we are drawn to the black holes that represent xylem tubes formed by deceased tissue. These vital conduits play a crucial role in transporting water and minerals from the roots upwards throughout the plant. Surrounding these xylem tubes is an array of small cells in a dense arrangement, colored in pink – this is known as phloem. The phloem acts as nature's highway for distributing food substances from leaves to other parts of the bamboo. Together, these two components – xylem and phloem – form what is called a vascular bundle. They work harmoniously to ensure proper nourishment and hydration within this magnificent plant species. In between these fascinating vascular bundles lie larger cells known as cortical tissue. These cells provide support and protection to the delicate inner workings of bamboo stems.
