Scipio Africanus (circa 236-183 BC), Roman general. Scipio led armies against Carthage during the Second Punic War, with his most famous victory being his defeat of Hannibal at the Battle of Zama. This decisive battle won the war for Rome and resulted in him being given the name Africanus. This woodcut portrait is from the 1575 Basle edition of Elogia virorum bellica virtute illustrium (Praise of Men Illustrious for Courage in War) by the Italian historian and biographer Paolo Giovio (1483-1552)
